One of the things we love about cruising in Canada is catching and eating Dungeness crabs.  Typically once we get anchored, we set up our crab trap then take the dinghy out and drop the trap in the water for the night.  We’ve found that we have pretty good luck catching crabs using chicken legs as bait.

IMG_1522Angie hauls the trap up in the morning and checks for “keepers.”  Keepers are male Dungeness crabs that measure greater than 165 mm in length across widest part of the shell.  Depending on the area we can keep 4 to 7 keepers each day.

Today when Angie hauled the trap she found 4 TINY crabs.  They measured somewhere between 50-100 mm each.  Sadly, there were no keepers and the crabs were returned to their home to continue eating and growing.IMG_1523

Maybe we’ll have better luck tonight!
