Leaving our anchorage at Portage Cove, the wind was light from behind the beam with a few rays of sunshine peaking out from behind the clouds. Perfect conditions for the spinnaker, and we had a nice downwind sail across Frederick Sound.
The two comments about Cannery Cove in our guide book are that it provides good protection from the weather, and that there used to be a salmon cannery on the shore. It looked like a convenient stopping point on our way north, so we decided to head there.
As we pulled into the anchorage, we were surprised to find one of the most scenic settings so far in Alaska. The cove is at the base of huge mountain bowl. Multiple waterfalls wound their way down from the snowfields to the large grassy meadow at the head of the cove.
We shared the cove with S/V Songline, a steel Waterline 38 sailed by Fred, Cynda, and Ian from Juneau. They have great local knowledge (in addition to a ton of sailing experience from a 3 year trip from Alaska to New Zealand and back) and were able to give us a hand-drawn sketch of a good anchoring location in one of our next destinations. Good folks, and a lovely place to spend the afternoon and evening.
