About 50 miles south of Juneau, glacier-carved Tracy and Endicott Arms extend from Holkham Bay deep into the Alaska mainland. In many years, the Dawes Glacier at the head of Endicott arm calves enough ice to make passage difficult. This year, it’s the two Sawyer Glaciers at the head of Tracy Arm that are calving a lot of ice.
Even though our anchorage is 25 miles from head of Tracy Arm, there are many icebergs floating in the channel. Tracy Arm Cove has a shallow bar much of the way across the entrance, so most of the large icebergs ground before they drift or are blown into the cove. But there are still multiple smaller icebergs floating in the cove, and we take advantage by stocking up on 1000 year old ice for our drinks.
