Cannery ruins at Taku Harbor

After our friends headed home, we continued our northward march.  First stop was Taku Harbor, a well-protected bay just 30 miles or so south of Juneau.  The next day featured an early morning start to catch the tide to Auke Bay, the port at the northern edge of Juneau.

MendenhallGlacier

A day spent in town is typically a whirlwind of laundry, grocery shopping, and boat chores that require a dock, and our day in Juneau was no exception.  A highlight of the day was connecting with the crew of S/V Gadabout, a beautiful Tayana 48, who are on their shakedown cruise for a planned trip around the world.  We first met Wags and Paula in a torrential downpour back in Santa Anna Inlet, and our second meeting couldn’t have been more different – Juneau was experiencing their warmest day of the summer so far with temperatures skyrocketing into the low 70’s.

Orca

The following day may have been even warmer, and we enjoyed the sunny skies and glassy calm seas as we headed north out of Juneau and then turned back south around Point Retreat.  Also enjoying the weather was a pod of orcas, and two of them celebrated by leaping completely clear of the water as they swam by.

Swanson Harbor bounty

Swanson Harbor was our final stop before heading into Glacier Bay, and its reputation for good crabbing didn’t let us down.
