Alaska is well known for its wildlife, and one animal that is featured in abundance is the fly. On past trips to British Columbia, Mike has shouldered the primary responsibility creating a fly-free zone on board.
In preparation for this year’s trip to Alaska, Angie presented Mike with an electric fly swatter for a birthday present. In his typical gracious fashion, Mike grumbled a bit about the difficulty of finding a place for such a thing on a small boat and then stowed it away.
Named The Executioner, our first occasion to use it came back in Seymour Canal. When the flies started to swarm, we pulled it out, took aim, and were immediately rewarded by a loud crack and bright blue spark as fly met electrified wire mesh. Both the sight and sound are indescribably gratifying after spending an hour or two in the presence of Alaska’s finest.
