One of the benefits of our more leisurely pace on our way south is that we’ve gotten to do more sailing.  When we’re trying to cover a lot of ground before a weather system moves in, it’s hard to be patient enough to be sailing at 4 or 5 knots if the wind is not in the perfect direction.  Lately, we’ve only been trying to cover 20 miles a day or so, so the slower pace of sailing to our destination is just fine.

Over the last week, we’ve had a great variety of conditions.  On consecutive days, we had a fabulous close reach in 10-15 knots around Cape Caution, a “sporty” downwind sail in 25-30 knots with messy 5’ swell + wind chop, a great spinnaker run down Queen Charlotte Strait, and then a close haul across the Strait in light enough winds to motivate us to deploy our staysail in addition to the genoa.
