Hornby Island is located on the west side of the Strait of Georgia about 50 miles or so north of Nanaimo. The entire south coast of the island is indented by Tribune Bay.
Blessed with a large sand beach, the bay attracts lots and lots of Canadians on holiday. When we arrived the beach was full of umbrellas, people playing volleyball, and kids running in and out of the water. Quite a contrast from some of the wilderness anchorages of past few months!
The hills above Tribune Bay are home to Helliwell Provincial Park. With 500 foot high bluffs looking down on the anchorage, the park is one of the prettiest places we’ve seen in the Strait of Georgia. There are stands of old growth madrone, coastal redwood, Douglas fir, and Garry oak, and the beautiful golden meadows overlooking the water are spectacular.
