In addition to being one of the most scenic and best protected summer anchorages we’ve had so far, Honolua Bay also means great snorkeling. Fish swim in the crystal-clear water right under the boat when we’re too lazy to get in the water. When we overcome our inertia and get in, it’s an easy 150′ swim to the edge of the coral reef – that’s where the underwater life really gets good.
Our first day, a large manta ray circled the bay. The ray used it’s 8′ wingspan to fly gracefully through the water before launching into a set of reverse somersaults with its wide mouth gaping open. We also shared the bay with several sea turtles, and of course we had a great time watching what seemed like an infinite number and variety of colorful reef fish.
We ended up spending three nights in Honolua Bay and only left because of a northwest swell in the forecast. Without that threat, we might still be anchored there!
