Angie and Mike are not really yacht club types – the image of a stuffy club filled with yachtie types in white pants and blue blazers doesn’t really appeal.
In central Honolulu, there are not many choices for mooring. There’s Ala Wai boat harbor, where many of the docks are decrepit and less than secure, and there are a pair of yacht clubs – Hawaii Yacht Club with its famous Aloha Dock, and Waikiki Yacht Club.
Arriving on a weekend, the Ala Wai harbor offices were closed. And the Aloha Dock was completely full, with boats rafted several deep. So, we were lucky that the Waikiki YC had a spot and welcomed us to tie up.
We were greeted with the best hospitality we could imagine – our neighbors on the dock behind, Sharon & Ian on their catamaran Wheytogo, invited us over for a drink to share stories about taking their boat to Mexico, the assistant commodore of the club offered to loan us his truck if we needed to go to the store, and everyone we met seemed genuinely interested to hear where we’d come from and where we were going.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the club also enjoys a spectacular view of downtown Honolulu as well as a pool and bar…
