Mike took off to Sweden for a week of meetings, so Angie’s parents flew out from San Francisco for a visit. We rented a house on the North Shore of Oahu and set out to do some exploring.
First stop was snorkeling and beach/lava exploration at Kuilima Cove, next to the Turtle Bay resort. It was a nice and easy beach entry for snorkeling and we saw quite a few species of fish, including the Humuhumunukunukuāpua’a, the Hawaii state fish.
After our morning at the beach we had worked up quite an appetite, so we headed out in search of some lunch. The North Shore is well know for its food trucks, so we had lots of good options to choose from. We ended up stopping at Fumi’s Kuhuku Shrimp and had some spicy garlic shrimp and lemon pepper garlic shrimp- Yum!
After lunch, it was time to stretch our legs and work off some of our shrimp. We parked along the side the highway and found a trail that led to Kewala Bay- a beautiful crescent shaped white sand beach with lots green sea turtles swimming in the calm waters.
We hiked out to Protection Point, which houses a WWII bunker. This pillbox served as one of the many shoreline fortifications manned by the military during the 1940’s, in order to protect Kahuku Airfield, where B-17 and B-24 aircraft were based.
Our hike ended at a beautiful old banyan tree. This banyan tree has been used as a filming location for numerous TV shows and movies, including Lost and for Pirates of the Caribbean.
Not a bad first day on the North Shore!
