With just one day left before Marco and Jan headed back to the mainland, there were still a few more places to tick off the list.

Honu enjoying the sunshine

Laniakea Beach is one of the best places on Oahu to see Hawaiian green sea turtles, or honu, on the beach.   On  average, their shell size is 4-5 feet in length and weigh around 250 pounds, although they can grow up to 500 pounds.

Honu like to haul out on the beach to rest and bask in the sun.  Adults are herbivorous and feed on algae and sea grasses.  We stopped at Laniakea and were not disappointed!  We saw 6 or 7 honu lounging on the beach and  swimming in the surf just offshore.

After a quick stop in Haleiwa for delicious burgers at Kua Anina Sandwich Shop, the next stop was the Bishop Museum in Honolulu – the Hawaii state museum of cultural and natural history.

Octopus lure

The museum visit started with a planetarium show, Wayfinders, about the voyaging canoe Hōkūle’a and traditional Polynesian navigation also known as Wayfinding.  How fascinating!

Next, we moved on to explore the main museum.  One of the highlights was joining a docent led tour, where we learned about the culture and history of Hawaii and the Pacific.

The Bishop Museum is a great spot to visit and was well worth the drive into Honolulu.
