Angie & Liz enjoying zipping along at hull speed on Madrone

One secret of traveling by sail is that the weather doesn’t always cooperate.  Sometimes the wind is too light or too strong, or coming from exactly the direction we want to go, or swirling around from what seems like every direction at once.

Happy sailors after a fantastic sail across the Santa Barbara Channel!

Occasionally, though, the wind cooperates to provide perfect sailing conditions.  And that’s what we had to cross the channel from Santa Cruz Island back to Santa Barbara.  The breeze held steady for hours, never dipping below 12 knots nor building to more than 14.  The northwest direction put Madrone on a close reach, her favorite point of sail.  And because the wind just started in the morning, the seas didn’t have a chance to build any significant waves.

Ice cream to celebrate a great visit

Madrone zipped along at 7-8 knots, charging back to town.  Fast sailing in flat water with family aboard – what could be better?
