After the rolly night at Cueva Valdez, Madrone’s crew was hoping the next anchorage would be a bit more tranquil. We headed around the northeast tip of Santa Cruz Island and dropped anchor at Smugglers Cove.
Smugglers Cove got its name from the days of sea otter pelt trafficking. After laws protecting the otters were passed, this anchorage was the perfect hideout for the smugglers – the location on the south side of Santa Cruz Island ensured that their ships were hidden from view from the mainland.
Madrone and crew were happy to find the peaceful conditions at Smugglers, with not an otter pelt-smuggling ship to be seen….
