Because we got a late start leaving Mazatlan, we arrived at night to our anchorage near the town of La Ventana on the east side of the Baja peninsula. We try to avoid anchoring in an unfamiliar spot after dark whenever possible, but we were comfortable entering the wide-open, mainly hazard-free roadstead of La Ventana around 10pm.
At daybreak, our reward for the overnight passage became clear – a picture-perfect anchorage. Miles of unspoiled white sand beach stretched as far as the eye could see, while the crystal-clear water showed the anchor and chain on the bottom 25′ beneath Madrone.
All of the boats from our mini-flotilla (Luego, Blue Heron, and Pura Vida) arrived within an 8 hour window, and by early afternoon everyone had caught up on enough sleep for a beach party. Food, beer, and drinks abounded as sailors stretched their legs ashore.
The sail across to Baja was great and the scenery at the beach was spectacular. But the best part of all is getting to share it with friends.
