There are many surf breaks that are reputed to have the “longest ride ever”. But the right hand point Las Islitas in Matanchen Bay outside the town of San Blas has actually made the Guiness Book of World Records for the world’s longest surf break.
Back in January, Matanchen Bay was Madrone’s first anchorage on the mainland. Winter in Mexico is northwest swell season, so there wasn’t any surf in the south-facing bay.
Now that summer is approaching, long-period south swells from winter storms in the South Pacific make their way to Mexico. The point at Matanchen picks up the south swell, and the gently sloping sand bottom off the beach means that with a large enough swell the wave can break for nearly a mile.
Our visit to Matanchen this time coincided with a decent south swell. Not quite large enough to create a mile long break, we had to settle for half-mile long rides. While not large, the wave just kept breaking – both Mike and Angie would break into mid-wave laughter at the absurdity of riding a wave for that long.
The downside of a half mile long ride is that it means a half mile long paddle back to the lineup. After the first paddle back, we wised up and instead paddled over to the beach to walk back to the point.
We love it here!
