After what seems like a long five months, Madrone has finally left the marina and is back in her element – out sailing and swinging at anchor.
We limited the first couple of trips to short daysails – first a couple of hours to La Cruz, then the next day a couple more hours out to Punta Mita. We’re partly still making sure that everything on the boat is working well – checking the engine for any extra vibration after changing the motor mounts and adjusting the alignment, sussing out the new running rigging that we installed over the summer, and trying to remember which line to pull on when.
We’re also turning the boat back on – bending on the sails that have been in storage, lubricating moving bits that haven’t moved in awhile, and recommissioning the watermaker after its summer storage.
While there’s still some small chance of tropical storms and hurricanes forming in late October and early November, we feel fairly comfortable leaving a bit early. Historic storm activity has been light after this point in the season, and we were lucky enough to have an average or slightly below average storm season this summer. The weather, although still very hot and sticky, has actually improved a bit and it feels like the seasons have started to change.
Next step, make a left turn out of Banderas Bay and head south!
