There are, rightfully so, a lot of restrictions about how the land and waters of the Galapagos can be used. Much of the islands are off limits to visitors, and there are a variety of activities that are either illegal or severely restricted.
Luckily, surfing is one of the things that is supported in the Galapagos. There are decent waves here, and a surprising number of surfers. The points on either side of the bay that forms Puerto Baquerizo Moreno have surf spots – El Canon to the west and La Carola to the east. Since the bay is on the north side of the island, both of these breaks require north swell.
Waves generated in the Gulf of Alaska travel over 3000 miles before encountering the rock reefs of the local surf spots. We got lucky and arrived here just as a north swell did, and we enjoyed two days at La Carola and two at El Canon.
The population of the island is only 7000 people, so we were surprised to find up to 20 other surfers in the water. And these humans were joined by countless sea lions – they’d also surf the waves, in perfect position with their snouts poking out of the face of the wave just in front of the curl. Fun for everyone!
