This is a lonely part of the ocean. After twelve days, we’ve only visually seen three fishing boats and one freighter. There have been another handful of fishing boats and freighters visible via AIS, but not close enough for us to actually see.
We did sail right by what was probably a fishing net. Over 10 miles long, it had a dim flashing white light attached every half mile or so. We were very happy that it happened to be deployed parallel to our course – it would have been a long detour around it, if we would have even figured out what it was.
Even the marine life seems to be elsewhere. Despite a steady company of flying fish, we haven’t managed to catch any dorado, or any other fish for that matter. Angie caught sight of one whale, and a couple of dolphins visited one night. There have only been a total 15-20 birds – a few tropicbirds and a couple of what look like small albatross.
Just us, Madrone, the wind and the waves. All’s well.
