This is a lonely bit of ocean. After more than five days sailing we’ve seen no sign of another boat, and Madrone’s only company has been the occasional seabird.
Yesterday afternoon, though, we were visited by a pod of dolphins (you could almost hear them asking why we can’t make the boat go faster). And this morning featured a flock of 10 or 15 shearwaters, gliding gracefully over the long ocean swell.
The birds seemingly paid us no interest whatsoever, swooping and wheeling far to the sides of the boat. But after a few hours, it’s clear that they’re traveling alongside us at the same time that they studiously ignore us. We’re happy for the company.
