Day fourteen finds Madrone a couple hundred miles off the coast of mainland Chile. Squarely in the cold Humboldt current, the weather has changed sharply. The days of boardshorts and sundresses have passed, and the crew is now decked out in full winter gear.

Today’s watch style includes long fleece trousers under a second layer of waterproof trousers on the bottom, with a shirt under a fleece under an insulated vest under an insulated jacket under a waterproof rain shell up top. The ensemble is finished with wool socks inside rubber boots and topped with a toque.

This is more layers than we wear for skiing. It’s cold and raining sideways and feels exactly like home.
