We’re a couple of weeks into the passage to French Polynesia, and so far it’s been a really good experience. Part of it is due to the fantastic boat, and part is due to the steadily improving weather. But one of the biggest factors is being able to share the trip with the rest of the crew.
Gaspar was hired as the captain for this passage. Originally from Malaga in Spain, he’s been a sailor for nearly all of his life. A two-time European champion in the Optimist class, he moved on to keelboats and was the skipper for Antonio Banderas’ racing team.
In his late twenties, he decided to fulfill a dream by setting out on a solo circumnavigation on his own 35’ boat – a two year plan ballooned into twelve year trip. Gaspar is now settled with his wife and two young daughters on the Chilean island of Chiloe, where he’s built a house between serving as a Patagonian channel pilot for large yachts.
Gaspar is exceedingly competent and always cheery – even when woken from a sound sleep for a 1am sail change. We’re lucky to have him aboard.
