Normal passage planning dictates leaving with a good weather forecast, but this was not a normal passage. Instead of timing departure for the optimal weather window, we left because the French Polynesian immigration police told us to.
So, we were fortunate to have steady winds for more than 90% of the time – we alternated between dead downwind under two headsails and a broad reach with a reefed main and genoa. Both the wind and the water were warm, the skies were filled with stars, and we only caught a few squalls and a half day of tropical rain.
