The island of Tahiti holds around 150,000 people, which is about 70% of the entire population of French Polynesia. Most Tahitians live in and around Papeete on the northwest corner of the island. The city is both the governmental and cultural capital of the country.
In addition to the expected beautiful beachfront park and backdrop of jungle-covered peaks, a pleasant surprise are the murals. The sides of many buildings are covered with paintings by local artists, the result of past Ono’u street art festivals.
