One of the gems of the southeast arm of the Beagle Channel is Estero Coloane. A large glacier-carved bay, Coloane features a stunning tidewater glacier, a thundering waterfall, fantastic hiking in the surrounding hills, and a hurricane-proof nook in the corner of the bay perfect for anchoring.
After a couple of months of much more sailing than walking, the hikes up the steep hills that ring the bay prove to be a good challenge for our legs. But we push on, and are rewarded with a breathtaking view of Isla Gordon, the mountains of Tierra del Fuego, and the Beagle Channel.
With only two sunny days total in the previous two months, we’re not quite sure what to make of the (relatively) clear sky and light winds. But maybe we could get used to it….
