Through Virgin Passage between the US and the Spanish Virgin Islands, Madrone points her bow to the northwest. Steady trade winds of 15 to 20 knots push us along through the warm, deep blue water.

As we sail past Puerto Rico, we hear the reassuring announcements from the US Coast Guard on the VHF radio for the first time in a few years.

As the sun rises, the chart shows Madrone sailing over the Puerto Rico Trench, around 27,000’ (8,000m) deep. The surface doesn’t look any different from any other patch of ocean we’ve sailed across, but we can’t help wondering about the creatures that live in the deep below us.

All’s well onboard.
