Maine is the epicenter of east coast, and probably American, boatbuilding. And the epitome of Maine boatbuilding is Hinckley.
Started by Henry Hinckley as a lobsterboat builder during the 1920s, Hinckley evolved through the years to become the preeminent American builder of sailing yachts and small motoryachts. Their Bermuda 40 and Sou’wester 42 are instantly recognizable as Hinckley, as is the iconic Picnic Boat.
Hinckley doesn’t build many sailboats any more, as most customers prefer powerboats these days. But the beautiful sheerline and graceful overhangs of a Hinckley sailboat are hard to beat for anyone who appreciates boats.
And Mike is a confirmed, card-carrying boat nerd, and a visit to Southwest Harbor, Maine, to see the original Hinckley yard is like a pilgrimage to Mecca.
