The Helford River is one of our favorite UK anchorages. Pastoral scenes of Cornish countryside rise from either bank of the wide river mouth, and those same high banks offer good protection from everything but easterly weather.

It’s also strategically located – it’s the westernmost well-protected anchorage in the English Channel for a deep draft sailboat. So it’s a perfect spot to wait for good weather to head for the shores of Ireland.

It’s also a surprisingly social place. Last time we stopped here, we had a reunion with Charles and Caroline, friends from the Azores. This time, we stopped to say hello to a fellow boat flying an American flag – the first we’ve seen since leaving Ipswich. We were happy to meet Noel and Tracey of S/V Haven, a beautiful nearly new Allures 45.9, also headed to Noel’s home country of Ireland.

Beautiful scenery from the boat, excellent walking ashore, settled weather, and friendly folks in the anchorage – we like it here!
