After a few months of mostly coastal sailing, it feels fantastic to point Oso’s bow towards the open ocean. We’re headed from mainland Portugal to the Madeira Group – it’s about 450nm to the first island of Porto Santo.
Conditions as we left the mainland were about as good as they get. A steady 15kt breeze blew from just aft of the beam, and Oso rocketed along between 8.5 and 9.5kts.
The wind shifted further behind us and dropped in strength, but we still managed decent speed in a pretty comfortable sea state.
