When we visit a new place, we generally prefer to anchor instead of staying on a marina. But steep-sided Madeira doesn’t really offer any protected anchorages, so we booked a spot in Marina Quinta do Lorde on the extreme southeast tip of the island.
And what a pleasant surprise it is. From the marina cat (who only interrupted his sunbathing to call for food), to the friendly international group of fellow sailors, to the sudden and unexpected appearance of a Vendee Globe race boat, the marina was a fantastic place to spend some time.
