The island of La Palma is one of the westernmost in the Canaries, and the capital and largest city is Santa Cruz. Nestled beneath a partially eroded volcanic crater, the town features a steep backdrop of steep green hills.

Santa Cruz is a perfect stop for Oso in the Canaries – there’s a comfortable marina, a well-stocked grocery store and municipal market within easy walking distance, and plenty of restaurants to choose from. And because it’s Spain, there is an endless supply of shaded cafes for whiling away the morning, afternoon, or evening along with the locals.

It’s officially the start of the Christmas season in Spain. While the 80F/27C weather doesn’t feel much like winter to us, Santa Cruz compensates with an impressive display of holiday lights. Nearly every downtown street is decorated with lights, and it’s a festive scene in the evenings as families stroll the streets and drink coffee and wine in the cafes.
