While watching the weather in the weeks before our departure, it seemed like the options for conditions for our passage fell into two main categories. We could have a lot of wind, sometimes more than we’d like, and big waves; or we could have light winds with a more gentle sea state, but run the risk of sailing slowly or needing to use the engine.

Sailing along nicely while waiting for the rain to arrive

We opted to leave on one of the latter weather windows, and the fantastic sailing of the first couple of days fades as a weak low pressure system pushes southward. For a heavy cruising boat, Oso sails remarkably well in light wind and we’re able to continue to make progress, with just a few hours of motoring to bridge the gap between the southwesterlies of the high pressure area and the northwesterlies behind the rain front.

All’s well onboard
