Starting off the day with chilaquiles- yum!

The weight of all of the tools, spare parts, and cruising supplies on board Madrone means that the boat sits a little lower in the water. So, one of our last tasks before we left the US for Mexico was to raise Madrone’s waterline a few inches.

After a week of eating at the restaurants in La Paz, we may need to raise the waterline a couple more inches. With delicious food available everywhere Madrone’s crew was back at it, eating our way through another city.

A quick stop to buy some tamales for a pre-dinner snack

Just as we pulled into the anchorage, we spotted our friends Brenda and Jeff from SV Adventurer. They invited us to lunch at Claro Fish Jr, and the feast was on. This place offered freshly fried fish, shrimp, and nearly any other kind of seafood imaginable.  Freshly grilled tortillas and a bar with 5 or 6 salsas and veggies turned the fish into the best tacos we’d had in months.

Pork & chicken tamales- delicious!

Dinner the following night was meat grilled over an open wood fire at Tres Virgenes.  As we walked towards the restaurant , we were so hungry that we had to stop to share some freshly made tamales sold on the street corner outside the restaurant.  Did we ruin our appetite?  Not a chance!

The waterfront malecon was bustling with primarily Mexican families enjoying a weekend festival.  And anywhere there’s a group of people, there’s bound to be street food.  We feasted on tamales, churros, and even a local Mexican doner kebab.

The good anchorages and marine services of La Paz make it a natural gathering point for boats either entering or leaving the Sea of Cortez.  So we weren’t surprised to run into some friends that we’d made earlier in the season.  A reunion ensued, and no reunion is complete without BBQ – J&R Ribs did not disappoint.

After all of this eating, it may be surprising (or it may surprise no one) that we found room for dessert.  La Fuente right on the malecon may have the best ice cream ever.  If not, the nearly quarter-inch thick housemade waffle cones sure make it seem that way.

Nearly a week in La Paz flew by, and we knew it was time to leave when we had trouble squeezing back into the boat after yet another dinner ashore!
