The weather here in Alaska seems to have settled into a fairly predictable pattern. There are 5-6 straight days of what the local weather forecast calls “Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain” – these days generally seem to turn out to be partly cloudy with spectacular sun breaks throughout the day.
These stretches of nice weather are interrupted by weak low pressure systems that bring a day or two of rain and sometimes stronger winds. One of these small storm systems was forecast, so it was time to get inland for some protection.

One highlight of Pelican is Rosie’s Bar. In continuous operation for 43 years, the bar is now run by Rosie’s daughter. But Rosie was in town from Juneau in advance of the annual 4th of July party, and we had the honor of meeting her at the bar. She seems a lot younger than her 86 years….
