Pruth Bay on Calvert Island is the home of the Hakai Institute, a privately-funded scientific research group that focuses on a better understanding of the British Columbia coastal marine environment. Much of the funding comes from the Tula Foundation, which was formed when a guy named Eric Peterson sold his share of a very successful medical imaging company.
The Hakai Institute purchased a fishing resort at Pruth Bay, and in addition to the research that goes on they are kind enough to open the grounds and many miles of hiking trails to the public. The grounds of their facilities are impeccably clean, with carefully tended gardens and very well-maintained buildings. They even go so far as to share their satellite-based WiFi with visiting boaters.
