For many people, one of the highlights of a trip to the Gulf Islands is a visit to the community of Ganges on Saltspring Island. For Mike and Angie, it’s too busy – lots of boat, seaplane, and (gasp!) car traffic.
It’s too beautiful an area to miss, though, so a good compromise is to stay across the channel in one of the many coves on Prevost Island. Prevost has no scheduled ferry service or towns, so it is very quiet and seems like what the Gulf Islands would have been like 50 years ago.
A large section of the northeast corner of the island is a national park, and there is a remarkably beautiful trail on a long peninsula out to Piele Point. Madrones (the tree, not the boat…) tower over the trail and are interspersed with red cedars.
Our favorite anchorage on Prevost is Selby Cove – aside from a couple of private homes overlooking the anchorage, it is rare to be disturbed in this place. And, there’s a great view of the constant stream of traffic into and out of Ganges across the channel.
