Yaquina Bridge on a typical Oregon coast summer day

Mike needed to spend a few months in Corvallis, OR during 2017, so we took advantage by moving Madrone from Portland to Newport, OR at the beginning of the summer.  While in Newport, we rented a slip for 3 months at South Beach Harbor just under the picturesque 101 bridge.

South Beach jetty trail

In typical Oregon coast fashion, most mornings were foggy, cool and calm, while most afternoons were foggy, cool and windy.  If we were lucky, the sun would burn off the fog and we would be treated to sun, wind & maybe a little warmth.  It was a rare summer day with afternoon winds under 20 knots.

Hiking through the park

Having the boat on the Oregon coast for a few summer months was really nice.  We regularly walked the half mile from the marina to the jetty at South Beach State Park.  There, we wandered on the beach and wished the surf was bigger, hiked some of the park trails, and watched the whales that seemed to have taken up residence on the rock reefs just offshore.

Our friend Leon enjoying the Rogue Brewery

South Beach Marina is also in the shadow of Rogue Brewery, and we made numerous (perhaps a few too many?) trips to their pub to enjoy fresh beer while looking at the moored boats. The Dungeness crabbing in Yaquina Bay is excellent, we had some great day-sailing on the Pacific, and we met some new sailing friends who just bought a larger version of Madrone.

Modrone’s home in Newport- moored next to her big sister Nanai, a Taswell 49.

We had a great time in Newport and were happy to have spent several months there.
