About a year ago, Angie asked Mike a simple question.

“Why don’t we sail to Hawaii?”

Making one of the 26 fittings for the new wires that hold up the mast

Of course there are all sorts of reasons not to go – the trip would take a lot of time, we’d need a lot of extra gear that we didn’t currently have, and there’d be lots of uncertainty about the weather, the sea conditions, and whether or not we could even make it.

But none of those reasons came to mind.  Instead, what appeared were visions of long days of downwind sailing and great warm water surf breaks.  So Mike replied, “I don’t know – let’s do it!”

Our new watermaker nestled under one of the seats

So, the last few months have been a whirlwind of preparations. Our To Do list was so long that it seemed unlikely we’d ever get even halfway through it.  All of the wires that hold up the mast were replaced, a watermaker was installed, the engine has been serviced, a liferaft and satellite phone have been added, and all safety systems have been checked and doublechecked.  And then checked again.

We’ve finally worked our way through everything (or, everything important, we hope) and are now watching the weather and looking for a good time to head out on the ~2000 mile trip.
