Madrone’s underbelly- keel, propeller & rudder – in the crystal clear water

Makua Beach is a stunning location.  Situated near the end of the road up the west side of Oahu, the Makua Valley is ringed by forest preserves that plunge nearly vertically down to a wide beach with fine-grained sand.

Another adorable honu

Spinner dolphins slowly circled the anchorage, resting (and occasionally leaping out of the water for a few spins) as they prepared for an evening of fishing.  Hawaiian green sea turtles prospected for algae and seagrass on the rocks near shore.  And the few people who make it this far down the road enjoyed the sparkling green-blue water from the beach or the tiny surge lapping up the sand.

Leaving our snorkel gear onshore for our beach walk

Mike and Angie swam to check the anchor (easy to see – 30′ of water this clear makes it feel like you’re floating in the air) and then continued on to the beach.  A stroll to each end of the half-mile long beach was the perfect prelude to preparation for tomorrow’s sail to Kaua’i.
