The sail to Kaua’i is just far enough that it’s not possible to make it during daylight hours. We planned to leave Makua Beach mid-afternoon, so we had the morning to enjoy the scenery and the pod of spinner dolphins.
Little did we expect to be raided by pirates! Nicole, Sarah, and Kylee came to spend the day at Makua, and they asked if they could tie their paddleboards up to our boat for a rest. Before long, they had boarded Madrone’s swimstep.
Luckily for us, these particular pirates turned out to not pose a threat to us. Instead, we had a nice chat and learned that they grew up together in Hawaii Kai to the east of Honolulu. They’ve just finished school and are off to new adventures.
Super nice folks and hopefully they’ll be inspired to go sailing themselves one day.
