Picking up the bus to Kilauea- A deal at $2/person/trip

Madrone has been a quieter boat since our stereo succumbed to a salt water dousing.  We’re out of radio or internet range for most of the time when on a passage, so getting some way to listen to music was a priority.  We started to poke around online, we found a new stereo that would fit the existing mounting point, and we learned that we could even get it shipped to us in Hanalei.

On our way to pick up the new stereo

We had no idea that General Delivery allows for a package to be sent to most post offices, and then held up to 30 days for pickup.  It’s a great service for people who are traveling and don’t currently have an accessible mailing address.  We ordered the stereo, selected the free shipping option, and put in the general delivery address for the post office in Hanalei.

We could hardly believe that our package arrived in Kauai from the east coast in 3 business days

Imagine our surprise, then, when we walked by the post office and found that it had been closed since the terrible flooding in April.  All mail for Hanalei is still being diverted to Kilauea, the next town over.

As soon as we got out of the post office we tore into the box & found our new stereo

For a normal person that has a car, the 8 mile drive to Kilauea is an inconvenience.  For us, it’s a major obstacle!  Luckily, there is a bus service that traverses most of the coast of the island.  We were able to grab a bus from Hanalei, pick up the package, and then have a delicious lunch at Kilauea Fish Market before heading home.

22 crimps later, it works!

Back at the boat, we pulled open the navigation electronics panel for what seems like the twentieth time.  Of course the new stereo has a different connector than the original, so 22 crimp connections later we were back in business!
