Most of our exploration of the Mexican coast so far has taken place on the surface. Bahia Chamela is known for its snorkeling, so we took advantage to poke around underwater.
The rocky headland that forms the northern edge of the bay is Punta Perula. These rocks extend below the surface and are home to many colorful reef fish. There’s even a little bit of coral – something that’s not common in Mexico.
The bay is also home to several islands that are reputed to have excellent snorkeling. We sailed the 5 miles or so out to the islands and dropped the anchor, but our arrival coincided with the start of a small southwest swell – the waves stir up the water and reduce the visibility, so the snorkeling conditions were not perfect.
But no problem, because swell in Bahia Chamela means that there’s likely to be surf down the coast… onwards we go.
