It’s rare to find a good Asian restaurant in a small town in Mexico, so when we heard good reviews of a Thai restaurant in Melaque we didn’t hesitate. Delicious!

Barra de Navidad is located on the south end of Bahia de Navidad, and the town at the north end of the bay is Melaque.  A bit bigger than Barra with more restaurants and stores, Melaque is great location for restocking the boat with food and supplies.

There are local buses and taxis that run the 3-4 mile road between the two towns, but our favorite way to get there is to take a 2 mile walk across the giant crescent sand beach.  The stroll passes hotels for both locals and tourists, kids and adults enjoying the steep waves on boogieboards, and a large wetland preserve.

Riding the local bus home from Melaque after grocery shopping

There are a fair number of northerners in Melaque, and most of them seem to come from Canada.  Local bars and restaurants often have hockey playing on TV, and there are a fair number of maple leaf flags waving from balconies.

We made the trip into Melaque three times during our stay in Barra.  We visited the large(-ish) grocery store in town, looked for a few plumbing parts to repair Madrone’s transom shower, and of course sampled the local cuisine.

Our reward after all of the hard work in Melaque!
