A short 20 mile hop north of Barra is the bay of Tenacatita. Surrounded by gently swaying palm trees and fine white sand beaches, Tenacatita is likely what a lot of people picture when they thing “tropical anchorage”. We arrived after a lovely sail, tacking up the coast in light winds.
A highlight of our arrival was finding our friends aboard Luego and Arctos in the anchorage. We joined the crew of both boats as we hopped our way down the Baja coast, and it is always nice to reconnect to compare past passages and future plans. Tenacatita makes a perfect spot for that – the water is warm, the beach access is good, and there’s a small restaurant at the head of the bay for cool shade and cool drinks.
One highlight was a dinghy trip through the tidal estuary that meanders several miles inland and up the coast. Surrounded on all sides by dense mangroves, the estuary is perfect territory for dinghy exploration. The shallow sand bar at the entrance means that access is only available at mid or high tide, but once inside we were treated to channels barely as wide as the dinghy. The crew ducked under and leaned around the mangrove branches growing into the channel.
After seeing a couple of small crocodiles sunning themselves on the side of the channel, we kept our hands and feet in the boat at all times!
