All by ourselves at Isla Cocina

With Mike’s sister, brother-in-law, and nephew flying into Puerto Vallarta for a visit, it’s time to head north.  A good weather window for rounding Cabo Corrientes approached, so we headed 30 miles up the coast to Bahia Chamela.

No one can accuse Punta Perula, the primary anchorage in Bahia Chamela, of being busy.  But after a week of being anchored with 20 or so other boats it’s time for some solitude.  We found it at Isla Cocina (Kitchen Island – it’s not clear why it’s named that).

We dinghied over to the neighboring island and explored the deserted beach

Located about 3-4 miles from town in the middle of the bay, Isla Cocina and it’s two smaller companion islands form a marginally protected anchorage that is good enough in settled weather.  We had settled weather and were lucky enough to have the islands all to ourselves.

We spent a quiet couple of days at anchor in idyllic conditions.  With very little swell or wind, the anchorage was perfectly calm.  The clear water exposed the fish darting back and forth beneath the boat.

Warm sun, warm water, and our own private islands away from it all.
