The first several days of this passage were forecast to have light winds, and that’s exactly what we’ve found. Half of the day featured winds of 7-8 knots on the beam, and Madrone can happily sail upwind at 5 knots or more in that breeze.
The other half of the day had even lighter winds from behind. So, Madrone ghosted along at 2-3 knots until the breeze dropped to zero as the sun rose. The crew is getting plenty of light wind sailing practice.
We’re about 125nm away from shore now, and somehow this heron circled the boat before landing on the foredeck for a rest. Herons are marsh birds, so how it made it here (and how it will make it back) is a mystery to us.
All’s well.
