Sun!

Ever since the edge of the ITCZ, at about 8N, it’s been mostly cloudy. This time of year, the ocean currents generate clouds for several hundred miles north and south of the equator. In the Galapagos, we had only a day or so of sun a week – the most frequent weather was what’s known locally as garua, a light mist that’s not very different from spring in Oregon.

So, after six or seven weeks it feels great to pop back into the sunny skies and cottony clouds that mark the zone of trade winds. We have sails reefed to prioritize comfort over speed as we sail close-hauled south and west. We’re not in the trades yet, but we’re looking forward to it!
