Madrone is working her way south through the archipelago bounded by the big island of Chiloe to the west and the foothills of the Andes to the east. Even though it’s still the heart of the summer (February in the Southern Hemisphere corresponds to August in the Northern Hemisphere), the weather here is cool and drizzly. Daytime highs are around 60F or so and light squalls regularly blow through, occasionally followed by a few sun breaks.

It doesn’t sound so much like summer, but after the tropical heat of Mexico we’re enjoying it fully. When we imagined cruising in southern Chile, this is exactly what we had in mind – seemingly endless small islands dwarfed by snowy peaks, and a tangle of channels to navigate.
