Marina Quinched

Marina Quinched is strategically located about half-way up the island of Chiloe, just outside the long estuary that leads to the town of Castro.  For Madrone, it served as a perfect spot for filling up with fuel, water, and groceries after being away from civilization for a month.

We spent some time stretching our legs and exploring the area around the marina

The marina itself is small by US standards, but large when compared to other spots around Chiloe – there are slips for 30 boats, and mooring buoys available for another 15 or so.  It’s located in the countryside, so getting into the town of Castro means a several mile walk to the main road (although passing cars reportedly will stop to offer a ride) and then a half hour bus ride.

Everywhere we go in Chiloe we find cute wooden churches

Instead of traveling overland to Castro, we waited until a break in the rain showers and then took the dinghy several miles across the wide bay to the village of Chonchi.  The grocery store there is conveniently located directly across the street from a beach with good dinghy landing – walking the groceries out to the “parking lot” is more scenic than at most stores.

Luckily we could use this cart to move the diesel from the truck to the boat

Reinhard runs the marina and provides a friendly environment for passing boats.  There is no fuel nearby, so he took our diesel jugs with him at the end of the day, filled them at the gas station near his house, and brought them back in the morning.

We stayed for two nights before shoving off to continue the northward trek.
