Sunday is a day off for the crew of NDS Evolution, so we invited deckhand Nacha for her first day at a tropical beach.
Most of Tahiti is fringed by an outlying reef, which makes for beautiful postcard views of shallow turquoise water near the island. But because most of the wave energy is spent breaking on the reef, there isn’t much left to make sandy beaches.
Taharuu is an exception – a gap in the reef allows swell through. This results in both a beautiful black sand beach and friendly waves for surfing.
About 45 minutes south of Papeete, we drove down for a day of relaxing on the beach, enjoying the sun and waves, and hopefully surfing on boards we’d find to rent. We didn’t end up finding surfboards to rent, but we did plenty of relaxing and enjoying. We swam in the warm water, watched families together on the beach, and soaked up the Polynesian atmosphere.
A great day!
