Our travel with AV follows a fairly predictable pattern.  We typically stay in one place for a couple of days or so, and we punctuate 3-4 days of van camping (vamping?) with a night in a hotel to take advantage of a hot shower and full standing headroom.

One of the benefits of camping in urban USA- Donuts!

After a several weeks of moving every few days, though, we were ready to stay in one spot for a bit longer.  We had pretty simple requirements – perfect weather (even in late November), decent food nearby, and easy access to surf. The conclusion was simple; San Diego here we come!

The best cinnamon roll Angie has had in her life. No joke.

The greater San Diego area stretches for a long way up the southern California coastline, and Encinitas is one of the beach towns toward the north end of the county.  Long stretches of sandy beach for walking, famous surf spots (Swamis and Cardiff Reefs, among others) for surfing and just watching the surf, and plenty of restaurants for eating (takeaway only, of course) makes for an easy life.

An amazing flowering Shaw’s agave at Moonlight State Beach

We enjoyed the luxury of staying more or less in one spot for an entire week.  One of the most comfortable Airbnb’s we’ve ever stayed in was home for 5 days, and one of the multiple beachfront campgrounds was home for 3 more.

A visit to the San Diego Botanic Garden. The entrance tickets were a gift from the owners of our Airbnb

Sunshine and temperatures in the low 70s (~23C) everyday – life is rough in San Diego.
